It’s always important to be prepared for any situation, but did you know the month of September is specifically dedicated to preparedness? Let’s take a look at what National Preparedness Month is and how you can participate during September.

What Is National Preparedness Month?

National Preparedness Month is held annually in September to raise awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness in the United States. The goal of the campaign is to empower families, businesses, and communities to make themselves aware of the resources that are readily available in case of an emergency.

The campaign began just a few short years after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, as a way to advocate for an increased need for preparedness for disasters. Since its start in 2004, the National Preparedness Month campaign has taken off. Through the campaign’s platform, organizations across America can equip individuals with resources and tools so they can be prepared for any situation.

How To Be Prepared

Since National Preparedness Month is upon us, here are some ways you can better prepare yourself for any disaster.

Create An Emergency Plan

An important part of preparation is to have a plan. Get together with your family at home and your employees at work and compile a plan to keep you safe in case of an emergency. Be sure to include a plan for communication if you’re separated, an escape route, and a safe meeting spot.

Be sure to conduct regular safety drills so everyone knows how to execute the plan. This is important so when everyone is panicked during an emergency, they’re slightly more relaxed knowing where their family or coworkers will be and how to get ahold of them.

Prepare An Emergency Kit

An emergency kit is important to have at home, work, and even on the go. Equip your kit with things like nonperishable food and water, extra medication, a first aid kit, flashlights, and batteries. You should also consider adding things like extra warm clothes and a blanket.

While these are just a few items you should consider adding, your emergency kit should include anything you think could be helpful in an emergency or disaster situation.

Promote Preparedness

Talk to your coworkers and community members and encourage them to create their own preparedness plan. You can also promote preparedness by sharing tips and information about emergency preparedness on your social media platforms.

Get Informed

A great way to get prepared is to stay informed. Start by educating yourself on national disasters. Understand the impact of different disasters, what the aftermath looks like, and what you need to do to be prepared.

Next, be sure your phone’s emergency alerts are on. Most smartphones are equipped with an emergency alert system that lets you know when inclement weather or emergencies are approaching. Be sure to have these alerts on so you can better prepare for an incoming disaster.

Participate In National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is the perfect time to unite as a community and prepare for any situation that could arise. Consider participating in the campaign by volunteering for emergency response organizations like the fire department, participating in local events that promote preparedness, and spreading the word about the annual campaign.
